Minnesotan’s are an active bunch and take full advantage of the outdoor spaces we have. That might be even more true in the winter because it’s not easy to get out and about, but we do it anyway.
So rather than hiding under a heated blanket until Spring, here are some insider tips for things to do in Minnesota this winter, embrace the cold like a local and break up that cabin fever!
The Park Rapids Lakes Area is a favorite family summer vacation destination for so many city dwellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With it’s proximity to nearby towns like Walker, Akeley and Nevis, and so many recreational opportunities nearby, Park Rapids really is the quintessential “Up North” escape you’re looking for!
For all those wanderlust seekers out there, times are tough. Despite the severity of the pandemic, if you’re open to being a little creative there are still plenty of safe adventures to be found close to home.

I’ve learned to be pretty flexible during the pandemic, working around last minute cancelations, location closures and crowd avoidance. I’m always on the lookout for new parks to visit within a stone’s throw of home - which in my case is south Minneapolis, and it’s become even more important during this very on-going pandemic.
My husband and I recently discovered the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington, and it’s quickly becoming one of our favorite spots to visit!
Last week my husband surprised me with the most amazing early birthday present - an Old Town kayak! He has had his own Old Town fishing kayak for over a year and knew that I was interested in joining. I’m not much of an angler myself, however, I’m happy as a clam just paddling around aimlessly and taking photos.

I’ve put together a list of what to pack, where we stayed and my favorite must-see things to do on your trip up north to take the guess work out of your travel planning!
I first heard about the plant sale a few years ago when a friend of mine casually posted about it on Facebook. We had just built our backyard garden bed and I was excited to start growing! 5 years later, the Friend’s School plant sale has become one of our household traditions.
