Book A Romantic Getaway on the North Shore

Imagine escaping to a place where towering pines meet the vast expanse of Lake Superior, where the air is crisp and the landscape is breathtaking. The North Shore of Minnesota is a special place to us. We’ve spent many years revisiting time and time again and are always finding new things to enjoy every time we go.

Where to Stay

While every trip to the North Shore is magical, our most recent stay at Tofte Trails was truly perfection. Getting to call Tofte Trails home base for a few days was the perfect change of scenery we needed to disconnect from the distractions of home and spend some quality time together.

They have 5 luxury cabins to choose from, nestled on over 17 acres of land with views of Lake Superior through the trees. Each cabin greets you with a charming little fountain right by the front door.

Once inside, you’ll find an amazingly comfortable king sized bed, a cozy kitchen that’s fully equipped to whip up any meal, mini fridge, local Fika coffee, excellent WiFi, aircon, a romantic fire place and possibly the most stunning double shower I’ve ever seen let alone got to use!

The best part? You can even bring your pup along! While we no longer have a dog at the moment, I’m certainly keeping this tidbit in mind for when we’re ready for our next fur baby.

Things to Do for Two

If you do decide to venture out of your romantic cabin, Tofte Trails is located just minutes away from the Lutsen Mountains so whether your looking to hit the slopes, lace up your boots and hike the numerous trails or try one of the several breweries, wineries, or restaurants nearby - there’s no shortage of things to do along the North Shore!

Grab Some Local Coffee

While our cabin was stocked with delicious roasted grounds from Fika coffee, it’s still fun to check out the local spot! If you’re more of a fan of latte’s than slow drip, this coffee shop is only a stones throw away from Tofte Trails. So you can get your caffeine fix before you head out on your adventure for the day.

Hiking

Tofte Trails is located on the same road as the trailhead of Oberg Mountain. This looping trail is just over 2 miles long and has truly stunning views of Lake Superior and of Oberg Mountain itself.

If you’re looking for a shorter hike with a big payoff, we loved checking out Caribou Falls! If you or your partner aren’t up for doing all the stairs down to the base of the falls, there is a viewing platform at the top that still provides fantastic views.

Our other favorite hiking trails in the area include Temperance River and Cascade River. For a short (but steep) hike with more stunning views, we really love White Sky Rock/Caribou Lake Viewpoint. It took us about 12 minutes to hike the 1/2 or so mile up (stopping a few times to catch our breath along the way) but if you’re up for a bit of a cardio challenge, the views are totally worth it!

Rent a Kayak or Canoe

If you’re looking to hit the water during your stay, you can rent kayaks and get an expert guide through Sawtooth Outfitters. They offer ½ day and full day excursions out on the majestic Lake Superior herself!

Wineries and Breweries

North Shore Winery is less than 5 minutes away at the base of Lutsen Mountain. They offer tasting flights of their wines and ciders so they have something for everyone. In the winter months, you can complete your visit with a rejuvenating sauna session!

If wine and cider isn’t quite your thing, I’d also highly recommend making a visit up to Grand Marais and checking out Voyager Brewing. They have a full food selection and really excellent brews!

Book a Spa Day

If you want to unwind a little further, there are several lovely spa’s to choose from along the north shore. The nearest to Tofte Trails are LutZen massage and the spa at Bluefin Bay Restort

Spend a Day in Grand Marais

Grand Marais is without a doubt the most charming town on the north shore. After a short 25min drive north of Tofte Trails along highway 61, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a small coastal town on the ocean. Grand Marais is very walkable and has tons of shops, art galleries, restaurants/coffee shops, all right on the edge of Lake Superior. You could easily spend the entire afternoon here!

After all your adventures out and about, head back to your lovely cabin at Tofte Trails and spend the evening enjoying the solo stove firepit on your private deck, making s’mores and star gazing (a luxury we don’t get to experience often living under the constant glow of city street lights) Just make sure you have plenty of bug spray if you’re out around dusk in the summer!

Or if the weather isn’t ideal, make good use of the cabin’s floor to ceiling sized projector and watch your favorite RomCom together!
